In their exhibitions and public projects, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg summon the creatures and landscapes of the subconscious realm. Through sculpture, stop-motion film, sound and installation, they highlight the porousness and fragility of our sociological foundations, investigating themes of lust, greed, exploitation and fear with a hint of the absurd. Within these childlike fantasies, protagonists and antagonists are interchangeable and sociological foundations morph and dissolve. A range of surrogates – fairytale characters, animals, post-humans and stereotypes act out often violent or sexual offenses digging into the darker side of the human unconscious. Whether by presenting the clay, plasticine, and wire flora and fauna that star in their videos, or by creating life-sized mise-en-scenes in which to view the films, Djurberg and Berg’s large-scale works are a portal to an uninhibited and riotous world of change and fantasy.
