Sherrill Roland’s ongoing examination of the structures and aesthetics of the American criminal justice system encompasses painting, sculpture, installation and performance. Across his practice, Roland brings attention to the lived experiences of incarcerated people, and the ways the country ignores or denies their reality. In 2022, Roland created a billboard for the For Freedoms project. Formatted like an eye test, the billboard reads ‘What does your innocence look like to a local judge? / What does your innocence look like the local police?” The artist asks the viewer to look, and to see what is missing.
