Wong Ping stages a tragicomedy of sex, desire, capitalism, and censorship, in sculpture and video. Rooted in the complex political history of his hometown of Hong Kong, Wong turns misunderstanding, repression, and family dynamics, into a whimsical, and sensual, world of transformation. The artist’s vibrant animation and joyful characters bring levity and irony to even the darkest of material. In his public projects, these characters subvert the traditional inferences of monumental scale — Wong’s tongue-in-cheek approach intervening in the urban landscape, like a comic superhero or fantastical creature.
