Kimsooja’s conceptual practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance. Across media, she uses a deductive, rather than additive, approach to bring attention to what is already there. With the goal of creating work that is ‘like water and air,’ her interventions in space create or reveal the atmosphere around us. The ‘bottari’, a traditional Korean bundle of personal belongings, knotted in a bed cover, is a material and metaphorical thread that runs through Kimsooja’s work. Adapting the form to an architectural scale, she sees her installations — such as To Breathe — as bottaris of light. Specially created UV film and scratched panels manipulate the rays that pass through them, weaving an ephemeral bundle around the space.
