HAIM STEINBACH: MoMA, New York

Over the past four decades, Haim Steinbach has amassed a collection of carefully chosen phrases and slogans from newspapers, magazines, books, and other everyday sources. hello again is part of this ongoing series of “found statements,” which are humorously infused with philosophical undertones. “When a statement is removed from its context it becomes suspended,” Steinbach has said. “It remains something of itself: a message and a design of letters, their type and form.” He reproduced hello again in its original font, altering only its scale, which is adjusted to the dimensions of the wall where it is installed. “What interests me is the play in which language becomes an image, and image becomes language.”
