Gillian Wearing (b.1963) is a British artist whose pioneering work explores the complexities of identity, self-representation and the delicate boundaries between public and private lives.
Between 2008 and 2013, the artist created her Spiritual Family self-portrait series. These 14 photographs all depict Wearing dressed as, or emulating through costumes, well-known artists.
In this display are four works from the series, entitled Me as…, in which Wearing portrays herself as Andy Warhol, Diane Arbus, Robert Mapplethorpe and Claude Cahun. These four artists had a profound effect on her practice and Wearing said: ‘I classify them all as my spiritual family.
